Frequently Asked Questions

What is the consult call like?  This is just a brief call for us to get a sense of each other. It’s a chance for you to ask me questions, and for me to learn a little bit more about what is bringing you to me, and what kind of support you are looking for. Finding a therapist who feels right for you is one of the most important parts of therapy.

What is a session with you like? I aim to have give-and-take in my sessions. This means I won’t be just staring at you as you talk. I’ll be asking you questions, coming from a place of compassionate curiosity. I’m not here to give you answers; I’m here to explore with you as you find your own answers. I aim to show up as an authentic human being, to invite you show up as an authentic human being. Sometimes we may be sitting with a challenging emotion. Sometimes, we will be celebrating the joys of things that feel good for you.

You say you’re a licensed creative arts therapist. What does that mean? When I initially started my work as a therapist, I studied as a music therapist. This means that I can use music interactively in my sessions as an additional tool to work towards therapy goals (though many people I work with don’t use music; it depends on each client). In New York, my license reflects this, saying I can work as a psychotherapist under the label of Creative Arts Therapist.

That’s the technical stuff behind that label. Practically, as a therapist, it has led me to do coursework in the arts and in psychodrama, which I think can let me offer a creative approach to therapy. Some people like using the creative arts in their sessions, and some don’t. Either is OK.

How long will I be in therapy? Unfortunately, there is no one set answer to this. This can depend on what is bringing you here, and how you work to implement the changes you want to see. For some people, therapy is like a tune up, and they feel comfortable moving on after a few months. For others, they feel that therapy is a helpful ongoing place for support and growth, and may continue longer.

Do you see people in person or online? I have availability for in person sessions in NYC, and online for people across New York State. My office is at 280 Madison Ave, between 39th and 40th St in Manhattan.

What is the session fee? Sessions are $225. There are a limited number of sliding scale slots.

Do you accept insurance? I don’t work with insurance companies because I believe the client and therapist should be determining appropriate treatment, including the approach and frequency, not the insurance companies. Insurance claims require diagnosis and release of clinical information to prove medical necessity for therapeutic services. This is counter to my approach to therapy. Finally, working with insurance companies takes up a good deal of administrative hours, which I feel is better spent providing direct services to my clients.

How long is a session? 50 minutes.
