My Approach to Psychodynamic Therapy in NYC

Psychodynamic, which can feel like a big word, simply means that we are looking at how you think and feel, and how that impacts you in life. We’ll look at patterns with curiosity, and work to untangle what is and is not working for you.

Some people hear the term psychodynamic, and the image of lying on a couch, talking to a therapist with minimal response comes to mind. I want to be clear, that is not how I approach therapy.

My sessions are interactive. I deeply believe each person knows what is right for them, and I see my role as a therapist to be someone who will help explore and discover who you are and what feels right for you. I may ask questions, laugh with you, or highlight patterns I may be wondering about.

My aim as a therapist is to show up as my authentic self, and to support you in feeling safe in our shared space. My approach is compassionate and curious. I deeply believe that people have answers within them; my job is to help uncover those answers.

Although psychodynamic therapy evolved from psychoanalysis (think Freud), there are many ways that differentiate my approach from psychoanalysis. In my therapy space, I work to acknowledge the broader societal dynamics that exist. I incorporate an anti-oppressive lens when exploring with my clients.

I want to help you understand who you are in the world, while also acknowledging the factors that exist in the world that have impacted you. When we are able to look at that more clearly, and offer compassion, we are able to create more opportunities to move from a place that feels authentic to ourselves.
