      <image:caption>I want to make a moment here to clarify a few things around boundaries, rules and control. A boundary reflects what you will accept around what does and does not feel OK for you. A rule is looking to control someone’s actions.  Now this can feel sticky or fuzzy, but it’s important to look at how we frame boundaries. Understanding the difference between boundaries and rules will help you implement boundaries. This will also ultimately help you in taking steps when interacting with someone who doesn’t respect boundaries.  As an example, a rule might be “you can’t talk about my body,” whereas a boundary is, “I will not engage in or listen to conversations about my body.” This gives you the control to decide what limits work for you, and what actions you wish to take. Setting a boundary is setting an expectation around what your desires and needs are. It is being clear about what you will and will not accept. Understanding this concept will help you understand where your control lies, and help you to feel less powerless. This also allows you to decide what you will do when your boundaries aren’t being respected.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This may mean that your boss is disrespecting your boundaries. Or it could mean a respected family member. Or it could be someone in an organization that is important to you. It may also tie into dynamics around race, gender, sexuality, or other societal hierarchies (which while they are arbitrary based on societal stories, can still have an impact).  Again, these are the times to explore what is and is not within your control. You may want to look at ways of stepping away from those scenarios. That said, if it is not possible, look at what you can do to help you cope in the meantime. Sometimes recognizing the places you have control can help you feel less powerless in the long run.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Sometimes the fear of disappointing others can come from growing up in a family where there was a lot of expectation put on you. Perhaps you were a caretaker, and you were rewarded for helping others. Perhaps you felt responsible for the happiness of others in your family because there were other difficult dynamics at play. It’s not uncommon for kids to want to make caregivers happy, especially when their caregivers are stressed in other ways. The fear of disappointing others can also be a sign that you didn’t feel accepted for who you were growing up. Perhaps you grew up in spaces where your mistakes were scrutinized. Perhaps you grew up being put down when you tried to be yourself. Perhaps you were compared to siblings or peers, and left feeling like you were “less than.”</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Remember that you are not responsible for other people’s emotions. Now, I’ve had many conversations about this idea, and it definitely deserves more nuance than what I just wrote, but I want to remove you from the responsibility of making sure everybody’s emotions are regulated and OK.  Do your actions and choices impact other people’s feelings? Yes.  Does that mean that you need to move in a way that is always trying to avoid disappointing others one hundred percent of the time? No. You can move with kindness and empathy towards others while still making the right choices for yourself. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the person with the challenging feelings to find ways to cope and regulate their own experience.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>What I can offer is that it’s OK to start small. When you take steps to do the hard things, you may start to understand the difference between what is uncomfortable, and what is dangerous.  You might start by asking for something different for dinner than what your partner requests. It could mean saying no to a social gathering. It might mean when a coworker asks you to do something for them, letting them know you don’t have the bandwidth right now. Notice that while it may feel uncomfortable, it is survivable.  And if you need to, you can take steps to remind yourself that you are OK. That could mean meditating, taking a walk and noticing how your body feels as it moves, or putting a weighted blanket on your lap. Sometimes reminding our bodies that we are OK helps us remember that we are indeed, OK. I also want to let you know that if it makes other people uncomfortable when you express a wish or need, that does not mean that you shouldn’t express it. Your needs are just as important as the needs of others.</image:caption>

I’m a New York based, licensed therapist who supports others in moving through and healing from trauma. I help others break free from patterns that no longer serve them, to live more authentic, fulfilling lives.  My hope is that in working together, you will find you are able to feel more sure in yourself. I specialize in trauma, family of origin challenges, codependency and grief. I especially love helping people break free from the doubt and shame that are holding them back. I help people begin to trust themselves, and to heal from the hurts of the past. I believe that many of the choices that we make come from a place of trying to survive in the best way we know how, and that sometimes the things that helped us in the past no longer serve us.       <image:caption>My degrees in Psychological Services and Music Therapy laid the groundwork for me as a therapist. Since that time I have studied IFS, psychodrama, the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), Somatic Experiencing, Attachment Focused EMDR, and vocal psychotherapy. My approach is informed by using parts work and somatic therapies. I use a trauma informed lens, and my stance is anti-oppressive. Through learning from anti-racist educators, disability advocates, and the LGBTQ+ community, I have learned to more deeply look at how the systems we operate in affect individuals. While I love learning the reasons why things work, my work directly with clients, in hospitals, in new parent groups, internationally, and one on one with people who want to make change have been some of my biggest influences.</image:caption>
